WATCH: Does the Torah mention the afterlife? The answer will surprise you
Despite the fact that the majority of Jews - and the majority of worldwide religious believers - would say that they believe in an afterlife, J-TV founder Ollie Anisfeld starts this video by emphatically stating that the Torah mentions the afterlife a whole total of zero times. Yet, as we know, belief in the afterlife is an essential aspect of Judaism. Ollie then goes onto to give Maimonides’ answer to this apparent contradiction: with the Torah being like a marriage contract between ourselves and God, our relationship with God should not be based on transactional self-interest. In this way, we should learn to observe God’s commandments out of love, not out of desire to get to a ‘next world’.
